Tracing the Early History of Corsets

Corsets have had a long, if somewhat torturous at times, fashion history and has, over the centuries emerged as an amazingly versatile piece of clothing. Although it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when corsets began adorning the bodies of the wealthy and elite, they became a fashion mainstay in the Elizabethan and Victorian eras. While some say that corset-like outfits used to be worn even in the Neolithic age, as cave drawings from that time have come to show, according to others these were worn by the women of ancient Roman, Greek, and Assyrian civilizations. However, irrespective of the origins, the corset was first popularized in the 16th century, during an age which marked a fundamental change in the concept of tailoring and clothing.
• 16th and 17th centuries – During the early 16th century, corsets were referred to as “payre of bodies”, and later, as “stays”. They came with shoulder straps and ended at the waist, flattening and pushing up the bust in the process. Usually worn with a farthingale, corsets emphasized the rigid flatness of the bodice and the contrasting fullness of the bust and the skirt. By the mid 1500s, corsets had emerged as a common garment for women and were made of multiple stiff layers of linen, in the front of which were inserted wooden shafts to keep the figure straight.
• 18th century – During this time, corsets, or “stays” as they were popularly called, were given a conical shape to raise the bust, keep the midriff tight, support the back, and in general, slightly narrow the waist. The torso assumed a “V” shape because of this corset, and regular outfits were worn over it. It was, contrary to popular belief, quite a comfortable piece of clothing and did not restrict breathing in any way.
• Late 18th century and early 19th century – It was in the late 1790s when the high-waisted empire style corsets became all the rage. Although short stays, those reaching till just below the bust line, were still worn, corsets during this time were designed to exert a definite body-shaping force. They stretched till below the natural waist, were stiffened with boning, and laced at the back. However, by the 1830s, corsets began to serve the dual purpose of narrowing the waist and supporting the breasts. Typical of the Victorian fashion sensibilities, corsets began to be worn to emphasize an hourglass silhouette. They were designed to inflate the shoulders, make the waist look narrow, and add more body to the skirt. It is also interesting to note that it was during the mid 1800s that the term “corset” was first used for this article of clothing.
• 19th century – By the mid 19th century, the exaggerated shoulders had disappeared and tightlacing had become extremely popular. Corsets lost their funnel shape and became more curvaceous. It was also at about this time that there emerged a thriving market for mass-produced, cheaper corsets. Such was the craze for corsets that by the late 1800s doctors had pronounced it as particularly dangerous to the health of women in general, and pregnant women in particular.
Corsets have survived over the ages and have emerged as a popular fashion garment in recent years. In fact, they are now available in a great variety of styles and you can even wear them as outerwear.

Paco Rabanne - Fashion Brand History

Francisco de Rabanne da Cuervo, known the world over as Paco Rabanne, was born in San Sebastian, Spain on February 18, 1934. During the Spanish civil war, he fled to France together with his mother who was then the Chief Seamstress at the Spanish salon of Balenciaga.
Paco studied architecture at the Beaux-Arts in Paris and graduated in 1964. To finance his studies, he produced fashion accessories made of plastic for Givenchy, Dior and Balenciaga. His career as a designer started in 1965 when he presented his “Unwearables” - a collection of 12 experimental contemporary dresses, which included his first plastic dress. The following year he opened his own outlet that featured metal-linked plastic-disc dresses and accessories made of plastic. His outlandish and flamboyant fashion statements totally veered away from tradition with the use of new materials and earned him the title “enfant terrible” of French fashion.
Soon, Paco Rabanne was a name to reckon with and was first in mind as a costume designer for cinema, theater and ballet. One particular standout costume he designed was for Barbarella which gathered a cult following. Although his style may have been considered bizarre and outlandish, his creations had a major influence in changing the face of fashion by pushing the boundaries of acceptable street clothing.
In 1969, he released his first fragrance, “Calandre.” Today, Paco Rabanne has a popular fragrance range of 36 fragrances.
In the 80s, his creations were set apart by the use of unusual materials such as crinkled paper, cotton toweling, aluminum, patchwork leather, ostrich feathers and upholstery tassels. In 1989, Paco Rabanne was honored with the Golden Thimble Award during the First International Festival of Fashion. A year later, he opened his Paris boutique on the rue de Cherche Midi, the interiors of which were designed and constructed based on themes of metal, glass and light. It was at this point in time when Paco Rabanne came out with his women's ready-to-wear line that moved away from the usual metallic and plastic materials and started to use softer man-made fabrics like sofrina and amaretto.
Rabanne wrote several books, notable of which were “Trajectoire” (1991) and “Journey: From One Life to Another” (1997) which were personal accounts of his search for spiritual understanding and how he has applied the results of this search to his creative work. These were followed by "Le Temps Presente", "La Fin des Temps", “Has The Countdown Begun?” as well as “The Dawn of the Golden Age”. His writings reveal his deep-seated interested in mysticism, astrology, out-of-body experiences and close encounters with God.
In 1999, at the age of 34, Paco Rabanne presented his final collection and retired, leaving the designing for the House of Rabanne to the younger designers and allowing himself the time to explore other art forms. By 2005, he opened the first ever exhibition of his drawings in Moscow, including a sketch dedicated to the 2004 Beslan school massacre. "I want this drawing to be sold and the money to be given to the women of Beslan," the designer said.

Easy Hair Style Tips For School Aged Girls

Hairstyles for preteens are usually a little more sophisticated than their grade school counterparts, but not quite as complicated as those of the high school set. Also, many girls in this age bracket may still need a little help achieving these styles, and will need something relatively simple to maintain. Of course, these attributes will help mom, too!
A staple of elementary school hair is the side part. To add some flair to this style, simply divide the side part into three sections. These sections do not have to be equal. Secure each section back in a slightly overlapping fashion with butterfly clips. This will give the part a messy, yet secure, look.
Another simple and easy look, which works well with bangs, is to pull the hair into loose pigtails at the base of the neck. These pigtails should be located toward the back instead of the side. Then, place a sparkly or fabric covered headband on top for a fun splash of color. Even if some shorter hair works its way free from the loose pigtails, the headband will keep the hair back from the face, adding to the carefree look.
If a girl is looking for something a little sleeker but still fun, the braided ponytail is a good option. For this style girls with curly hair may want to straighten their hair first, to make the hair easier to braid. This style can work with a side part or a middle part, depending on your preference. On one side, begin to braid your hair in small sections, starting at the part and continuing down the length of the hair. Do the same on the other side as well. It might be necessary to secure the first braid with a ponytail holder or clip while braiding the other side. If doing a middle part, pull the remaining hair into a low ponytail at the back of your head, toward the nape of the neck. If doing a side part, pull hair into a side ponytail on the same side of your largest part, again low to the neck. Secure with a ponytail holder, preferably one that matches your hair color.
Finally, at this age many girls may decide that they are done with long hair and want to opt for a short hairstyle. This by no means limits the options for a variety of hairstyles. With short hairstyles, hair products will be key in styling. Using a strong pommade can allow girls to have a spiky, punk style. Pommade should be used on dry hair, allowing for a "sculpted effect," molding the shape of the style.
Curly hair can also work well with short hair, and a good hair gel for curly hair should be used. This should be applied on damp hair, scrunching the curls with your fingertips. Hair bands, which resemble large ponytail holders, can work to add an element of style to short, curly hair. A girl can use one of these, placed toward the forehead, to give the illusion of bangs, or can use multiple hair bands, even different colors, moving in gaps toward the back of the head to add dimension.

Imitation Jewelry Takes Over the Market

There is absolutely nothing wrong with imitation jewelry. It has actually won the hearts of a lot of women, and even men too. Yes, the genuine gold jewelries with precious stones can be quite captivating. We do love those too. Yet, at this time and age there are certain concerns that make us want to go for imitation jewelry rather than the authentic and expensive ones.
Reasons to Wear Imitation Jewelries
If you love jewelries and accessories, you most likely have a few sets of real diamonds, gold or the ones with pearls, sapphires and emeralds. Of course, those are lovely. It is actually too lovely that you would not want to wear it everyday, right? It can be quite impractical and unsafe if you display those high-priced jewelries when you go to work or do your groceries. Genuine pieces of jewelry may attract attention that you do not want. You can be a target of mugging or theft. It can actually be quite amazing how these types of people can be really good when it comes to identifying genuine jewelries.
Does that mean that you can not wear jewelries anymore? Of course not! There are imitation jewelries that can make you look equally fabulous without having to spend so much money. There are a lot of different jewelry designers these days that are so good when it comes to creating elegant and classy jewelries. It is so intricately done that people around you would barely notice that you are wearing imitation.
It is really quite impractical to invest too much on expensive jewelries. If it would be for sentimental reasons like a bracelet for your daughter or an eternity ring, then it can be great to opt for the real ones. Yet, if you are looking for something that can complete your daily wardrobe for the office or one that can adorn your dress for a party, go for the imitation jewelries.
Another thing that has to be considered is the fact that the value of gold is no longer as high as it is before. Selling or pawning diamond jewelries would not give you much anymore. This is all because of the economic trend. So, investing on jewelries for future profit is not exactly a good choice.
Buying the Right Imitation Jewelry
When you buy imitation jewelries, you also have to set a specific standard so that you can make the most out of the money that you have. Not because it is a replica, it already means that you should not care about the quality.
It is best if you check out the original designs too. You might want to see how the genuine Tiffany or Cartier looks like so you have a point of comparison. You should also pay attention to the weight. Authentic jewelries are not too light so you might want to avoid the imitation jewelries that seem weightless. Examine the details of the imitation jewelries too. These are usually mass produced so see if the lines and curves are smooth.
There are really cheap jewelry replicas but this may not look too elegant. If you want to remain classy and chic even if you are not wearing the genuine ones, choose the imitation jewelries that are still made with high quality.

Makeup Tips: Choosing the Right Lipstick For You When Shopping Online

Choosing the right shade of lipstick can make or break your overall look. It is the finishing touch when applying makeup, and sets the tone for the look you want to achieve. Casual events require a more subtle lip that can be worn during the day. Professional makeup looks should be more conservative for the office. You can show your dramatic side at night and at formal events with bold lip color.
For an "everyday" lipstick, it is a good idea to find a neutral tone that complements your skin tone and highlights the natural color of your lips. Depending on your skin tone, it could be a light pink or tawny color. These shades works best at casual events, weekends, and during the day.
For a more polished look at the office, slightly darker versions of your "everyday" lip color will look professional and dynamic. A raspberry or brick red will make you appear well-groomed and appropriate for the office. A good makeup tip to consider is to keep the rest of your face more neutral to avoid an overwhelming makeup look. The lipstick should be the focal point of the face to maintain a conservative look.
Evenings and formal events are the perfect time to experiment with bold lip color. Vibrant reds, shimmering bronzes, and deep plums dress up an outfit for an elegant evening out. There is a perfect shade of red lip color for everyone, and another good makeup tip is to think of your skin tone when choosing the right shade for you. Very pale skin looks creamy and doll-like when accented with a true red. This glamorous shade can complement olive tones if it has a bit of an orange undertone to it. Darker skin looks amazing with deep red and plum lipsticks. Pink is the most neutral evening shade, and looks great on fair and medium skin. Bronze tones are perfect for olive and darker skin tones.
There are some fabulous makeup brands and internet retailers to look into when shopping online. http://Dermstore.com sells the top beauty brands and offers free shipping and product samples. There are lipsticks from top brands like Two Faced and Lorac, as well as mineral lip color from names like Pur Minerals and Glominerals.
NeoStrata Cosmetics is a New Jersey-based company that features skin care products that were developed by dermatologists. In addition to cleansers, moisturizers, and body treatments, there is a line of makeup that works to cover imperfections flawlessly. This line of makeup is perfect for covering discolorations and pimples that can look distracting next to a bold lip color.
Lauren Hutton has her own line of skin care and makeup, including a large array of lip products. Moisturizing formulas glide color over lips without drying. The Aqua Elements Lip Tint features shea butter, avocado, and aloe to create a smooth look with conditioning. For a long-lasting wear, the Lip Treatment Duo prevents feathering while providing rich color.
When shopping online for the perfect shade, a good makeup tip is to look through the tubes you already own. If there were specific ones you did or did not like, ask yourself why you loved or hated the color. Perhaps a color was too light and washed you out. Another color may have been too bright and overwhelmed your facial features. Find the best shades that have worked for you in the past and find what they have in common. It's possible you look best in a certain shade of pink or red. Discovering what previously worked best for you is a great way to find your next favorite lipsticks when shopping online.

Fertility Awareness Method is a Natural Alternative to Pills

It is important to watch your body’s signs so you can understand when ovulation is coming. This means you can use the Fertility Awareness Method to discover when you are the most fertile. Then you will know whether to abstain from sexual activity or to enjoy intercourse.
Rather than getting desperate, you should start watching your body’s signs. It has been created to let you know when ovulation is going to happen. Knowing this date is necessary for those trying to get pregnant or wanting to avoid it, partly because they aren’t taking actual birth control pills. A variety of women have started using the Fertility Awareness Method, as it serves as a natural alternative for learning when the body is fertile for developing a baby.
However, if you want the Fertility Awareness Method to be successful, you need to know your three fertility signs every morning. It requires close monitoring of your basal body temperature, the cervix’s position and knowing the amount of cervical fluid in the body. Every morning you will receive a different response, which is why you need to know your body and make sure to track the numbers.
It is important to understand your body, because it is the only way you will know what is going on in the complicated reproductive system. The reason is there are three signs that indicate ovulation will be beginning. One that is noticeable is the body’s waking temperature will continue to rise for around 12 to 16 days. At the start of ovulation, the cervix quickly drops, becomes firm and is closed. The cervical fluid dries up quickly as well.
During the menstrual cycle cervical mucus changes consistency and plays critical role in fertilization of eggs. Cervical mucus before ovulation help in drawing sperm up and to the fallopian tubes where fertilization takes place. It also helps to keep up the survival of sperm within the woman’s body.
In a 28 days cycle, after 5 days of menstruation there are 5 dry days.
Cervical mucus begins with sticky, cloudy, whitish, or yellowish secretions. The wetness increases to the wettest day when mucus is quite unique: like egg whites - clear, very slippery, abundant and very stretchy. Ovulation occurs sometime in the 2 days before or up to 2 days after the peak day of elastic fertile mucus.
There are different signs after ovulation has passed for another month. Suddenly, the body’s waking temperature is low, the cervix is higher, open, and softer, and the cervical fluid is once again wet.
It is important to know whether or not you should use the Fertility Awareness Method, as it is a commitment on your part. You cannot do it halfway, because otherwise it isn’t an effective birth control means. For those who know their body, these women like using this method because it controls the body’s reproductive system without having to take any pills. Instead, when used correctly, this method is a natural alternative to preventing pregnancy or telling you when it is time for sexual activity.
